Comacchio Valleys Loop – 55 km of nature, history, and waterside silence

If, during your stay in the Ferrara area, you’re looking for an immersive nature experience, the Comacchio Valleys Loop is one of the most fascinating cycling itineraries in the Po Delta Park. A 55 km route winding through embankments, shimmering lagoons, historic fishing huts, pink flamingos, and evocative coastal landscapes.

Distance: 55 km
Surface: mixed asphalt and gravel
Recommended starting point: Comacchio – COOP parking lot, Via Fattibello (Trepponti area)
Signage: “CICLOVIA VALLI DI COMACCHIO” + directional stickers

The route:

The itinerary forms a loop and is best ridden counterclockwise, starting from Comacchio, the “Little Venice” of the Delta.

Cycling along the lagoon embankments, you reach the Foce Fishing Station, where a reconstruction of the Etruscan city of Spina tells the ancient story of the relationship between humans and water. From a panoramic observation tower, the view opens onto the Valleys: a silent, expansive horizon unlike anywhere else.

Continuing along the water, you arrive at the Casone Donnabona, a traditional fishermen’s hut once used by lagoon guards, accessible via a wooden footbridge. The route then follows the Agosta Embankment, an ancient Roman road now offering a peaceful ride between fields and canals, until reaching Prato Pozzo, a small refreshment stop with a horse breeding farm.

From here, the path climbs onto the Reno River Embankment, where pink flamingos wade through the shallow waters, creating an unforgettable natural spectacle.

Upon reaching the Volta Scirocco Sluice, you enter the iconic Argine degli Angeli: a road suspended between sky and water, where it feels as if you’re cycling directly on the lagoon. This leads to the Bellocchio fishing station, known for its historic eel fishing structures.

An underpass allows you to cross the Romea road and reach the Lido di Spina, then continue toward Lido degli Estensi, crossing a bridge with sea views. From here, a short pedestrian and bicycle ferry takes you to Porto Garibaldi. Following a dedicated cycle path, you eventually return to the heart of Comacchio, right in front of the evocative Trepponti bridge.
